What is the difference between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist?
Dietitians are health care professionals who have earned a Bachelor’s degree specializing in food and nutrition and have completed supervised practical training through a university program or in an approved hospital or community setting. Dietitians are accountable to provincial regulatory bodies for their professional conduct and the care they provide. The terms “nutritionist” or “registered nutritionist” are not protected terms in Ontario. This means that anybody can call himself or herself a nutritionist and there are no standards for their quality of care.
What does your Initial Consultation consist of?
At your initial consultation, you can expect to discuss your personal nutrition goals and/or those of your physician. An assessment will be completed reviewing information such as your medical and family history, eating habits, weight and height. Together with the dietitian, you will set goals, discuss strategies for success and a Nutrition Care plan will be tailored to your individual needs. The key is to create a plan that is sustainable and fits within your lifestyle.
What does your follow-up visit involve?
Similar to the initial consultation a brief assessment is done to track your progress. Your experiences with the previously set goals are discussed including progress and challenges. Modifications may be made to the previous plan, along with new goals and strategies to deal with potential obstacles are discussed. At Matrix Physiotherapy, our Dietitian is there to work with you to keep you on track in reaching your goals.
Is it covered by Health Insurance Plans?
Many private or workplace Extended health insurance plans or Health spending accounts cover Nutrition Counselling by a Registered Dietitian since they are licensed health care professionals. Please check with your insurance company for your annual coverage details. If your plan does not cover the services of a Registered Dietitian, save your receipt. In the province of Ontario, Registered Dietitians are classified as an “Authorized Medical Practitioner” as shown here. What this means is that you can save your receipts and supply them to your accountant for a non-refundable tax credit.
How can I benefit from a Registered Dietitian?
Whether you’re seeking relief from a chronic condition, trying to reach a healthy weight, or simply want to feel better and more energized, professional nutritional counselling can help. The following are just a few of the reasons that many of our patients choose to see one of our dietitians:
